Balak

בלק

the blessing he couldn't hold back

Balak: black-ink woodcut cover

Balak, king of Moav, is so crazed with fear that he hires the one freelancer money can buy: Balaam, a prophet who curses for a fee. He saddles his donkey, climbs to a ridge above the camp, and opens his mouth to bring a nation down. Three times he tries, and three times the curse turns in his throat, and what comes out is a praise that 'shocked and persuaded my soul to ignite', so that over the camp he meant to doom 'the light is growing brighter now'. He is staring at a people of whom 'we're all in this together' is simply true, and the malediction has nowhere to land. The most famous blessing is the line we now sing walking into shul: מה טובו אוהליך יעקב, "how goodly are your tents, O Yaakov." He came to raze the camp and ended up praising its homes.

Two teachings meet on that ridge. The Degel Machaneh Ephraim says Israel was "cleaving to Him, one in one, all is one," bound so tightly to its Source that even a hired mouth gets drafted into blessing. Balaam thought he was the author; really he was only the channel, the man whose honest confession could only be 'if I could I would, but I don't know how'. The Ohev Yisrael says what the flow pushed through him was a vision of homes: the tents of Yaakov, where God is met only at the end of the road, and the dwellings of Yisrael, where you live with Him straight through. The curser's accidental gift was a blueprint for a holy home, where 'in the farmhouse, things will be all right'.

There is a quiet instruction in that. You cannot always choose what comes through you, but you can build what it lands on. Make the camp worth blessing, the kind of home a stranger sent to curse you would look at and lose his words. Hold the door open, 'come waste your time' at that table, and trust that 'everything's right, so just hold tight'. Sometimes the blessing you didn't mean to give and the one you didn't know you needed are the same line. 'You're already there.' Good Shabbos.
