Lech Lecha

לך לך

the voice that knows the pasuk

Lech Lecha: black-ink woodcut cover

Two words. That's the whole call.

"lech lecha" - "לֶךְ־לְךָ֛" - "go... for yourself."

No map. No name for the place. Just "אֶל־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַרְאֶֽךָּ" - "to the land that I will show you."

🎶 'When I hear that lonesome whistle blow'... and a seventy-five-year-old man packs up his whole life and GOES.

But stop on that second word. Lecha (לְךָ֛). For YOU. Hashem could've said lech, go, and left it there.

Rashi reads it as a kindness: go for your benefit, for your good. And the very next pasuk reads like an offer letter: "וְאֶֽעֶשְׂךָ֙ לְג֣וֹי גָּד֔וֹל וַאֲבָ֣רֶכְךָ֔ וַאֲגַדְּלָ֖ה שְׁמֶ֑ךָ" - "I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great."

Children. Wealth. A famous name.

All TRUE. All coming.

So where's the test???

The Ohev Yisrael, the holy Apter Rav, Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel, says the hard part of Lech Lecha was never the leaving. The hard part was a voice.

And here's the twist: the yetzer hara is the one cheering for the mitzvah. It whispers Hashem's own promises back to Avram as the reason to go. Think of the kids! Think of the money! Think of your name!

It quotes Chumash better than we do.

🎶 'Is that what the prophet told me he saw?' 🎶 'And what's the return on the faith I've provided?'

Every word of that pitch checks out. And that's the danger, says the Apter Rav. Go for the payout and you're still serving... just serving YOURSELF. Hashem gets demoted to the guy who signs the checks, and Rashi's "for your good" quietly turns into "for me, me, me."

So what does Avram do with a voice that has every fact right? The Apter Rav gives it in one line:

"lo hishgiach al zeh v'hesiach da'ato l'davar acher" - "לא השגיח על זה והסיח דעתו לדבר אחר" - "he paid no attention to that, and turned his mind to something else."

He knows it's all coming. He just... looks away. Back toward the One who called.

And the Torah says it outright: "וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אַבְרָ֗ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר אֵלָיו֙ ה'" - "and Avram went, AS HASHEM HAD SPOKEN to him."

He went because he was spoken to.

Once you see that reflex, it's all over the parsha. The king of Sodom offers him the whole haul from the war, and Avram swears: "אִם־מִחוּט֙ וְעַ֣ד שְׂרֽוֹךְ־נַ֔עַל" - "not so much as a thread or a sandal strap." 🎶 'Nothing here that I'd care to take along'.

At the covenant between the pieces, the halves are laid out on the ground, and "וַיֵּ֥רֶד הָעַ֖יִט עַל־הַפְּגָרִ֑ים וַיַּשֵּׁ֥ב אֹתָ֖ם אַבְרָֽם" - "birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Avram drove them away." 🎶 'I see the vultures moving in'... and an old man is out there waving his arms.

The king brings money. The birds come for the pieces. Avram refuses one and chases off the other.

He won't let ANYTHING land on the moment between him and Hashem.

Pull up a camp chair, phriends, and let's be honest about ourselves. (I'm preaching to myself first here.)

We are payout people.

We'll stand six hours in a GA line on hot asphalt that smells like sunscreen and somebody's patchouli for a shot at the rail. We carry a scorecard in our heads of every song we've caught and every one we haven't. "Dude, I'm nineteen shows deep and STILL no Harpua." (And when it finally drops? You're already counting down to Destiny Unbound.)

Mid-jam, phones light up in the dark... somebody's checking whether that was a bustout.

And look, it's human. We want the song. But feed it long enough and the show turns into a vending machine. Put in six hours, get out a Harpua.

And we do it with our mitzvot too sometimes, like when we drop the tzedakah in the pushka and some quiet part of us is already watching the mail for the parnassah to show up by Thursday.

That voice isn't going anywhere. Avram shows us what to do with it: hear it... and turn your head. Hesiach da'ato. Look back at the One who called you.

Ask anybody twenty years into a good marriage why they still choose each other, and what you get is 🎶 'The kind of love I can't explain'.

And the rewards? Still coming. Hashem keeps every promise in this parsha. You just stop staring at them.

Hashem is calling every one of us this week, quietly, by name. My wish for all of us is to hear Him over all the noise and go just because it's Him... and to look up somewhere down the road and find Him walking right next to us, every promise already in His hands.

Good Shabbos, phriends.
