Pinchas

This week's parsha opens in wreckage. The plague of Baal Peor has just torn through the camp -- twenty-four thousand gone, an entire nation Down with Disease -- and the survivors are left standing in the ash with the question every generation eventually asks: 'Where do you go when the lights go out?' And then comes a command that sounds, on its face, like plain vengeance: "צרור את המדינים", attack the Midianites, the ones who engineered the fall.

The Degel Machaneh Ephraim, the Baal Shem Tov's grandson, hears something deeper in that word tzror. A tzror is a bundle, a binding -- and he reads the command as "לצרור ולקשר הדינים בשורשם", to bind the harsh judgments back to their root, because "המתקת הדינים הוא בשורשם" -- the sweetening of judgments happens at their root. Harshness, he teaches, is what a holy thing becomes when it falls far from its source, and the repair has to happen at the source: 'if you can heal the symptoms but not affect the cause', the bitterness just grows back. The real avodah is to carry the dark thing itself upward -- 'Swim to the light source or fly like a moth' -- because the moment it touches home, it sweetens on its own.

Anyone who has stood inside a deep dark Waves at Limestone -- the one that slid past the edge of the map and found David Bowie waiting on the other side -- knows this teaching in their body. So does anyone who held on through the Stash of July 8, 1994, the same night Yerushalayim Shel Zahav floated over Great Woods: the darkness circles down and down, the whole room holding it together, wondering if it will ever find its way home... and then it turns, and the room turns with it, and that turn releases more light than anything that started sweet ever could. That was Pinchas. One man walked straight into the darkest moment in the camp, bound it at its root, and Hashem answered him with "בריתי שלום", a covenant of peace. The darkness was holiness a long way from home, waiting for someone to walk it back -- to bring it 'backwards down the number line' -- all the way to the root, where everything is sweet.
